In this book, we will briefly discuss the training methods of Still Soft Qigong. The reason for this is simply that Soft Qigong training is a Nei Dan practice. In theory, it is much harder to understand and practice. It is also more difficult to train. In Soft Qigong meditation practice, you are dealing with your own mind and trying to promote your spirit to an enlightened level. Regulating the mind is the most difficult part of the training. For this reason, it is not easy for a beginner to grasp the essence of the training.

B. Regulating the Body for Moving Soft Qigong

In Moving Soft Qigong, the use of muscles and tendons is again reduced to a minimum while keeping your body in motion. You must move in a manner that allows your muscles and tendons to be in their most relaxed state. The purpose of Moving Soft Qigong is the conditioning of your joints, including the ligaments and tendons. Only when you are in this relaxed moving condition can you improve the Qi circulation through the joints to the bone marrow. This kind of Moving Soft Qigong is the foundation of Soft Jin manifestation. In Soft Jin manifestation, your entire body is treated like a soft whip. In order to reach this stage, the joints must be soft, loose, and relaxed. From this, you can see that Moving Hard Qigong emphasizes training the skin, muscles, and tendons, while Moving Soft Qigong focuses on training the tendons, ligaments, bones, and marrow.

From this, you can see that the first stage of regulating the body in Moving Soft Qigong is to learn the movements correctly. The movements can be a simple single motion, for instance the waving motion of a Crane wing, or a combination of many complex moving postures, such as a Taijiquan sequence. After you have learned the correct movements, then place your mind inside the joints to make the relaxation reach to a higher level, while coordinating your breathing with the movements. Once your mind is able to feel deeply into the joints, you then learn how to fully loosen and relax these joints to a deep level. From this, you can see that in Moving Soft Qigong, coordination between mind and breath is crucial.

Generally speaking, the most difficult areas to regulate in Moving Soft Qigong are the spine and the chest. However, it is important to have these areas soft and relaxed. In Chapter 6, we will introduce White Crane style’s Moving Soft Qigong, known as Flying Crane Gong. Hopefully, this book will enable you to make your spine and chest more healthy.

2. Regulating the Breathing

In Qigong practice, after you can remember the forms or patterns of movement, and have tuned your body the desired level of relaxation (Soft Qigong) or tension (Hard Qigong), you should start to pay attention to the process of regulating the breathing.

Breathing is considered to be the strategy of Chinese Qigong. Coordination of your breathing allows you to regulate your body and lead your Qi efficiently.
